Dear Shopper,

We have been bombarded lately with both good news and bad news about what people eat worldwide. As bad as it is, there is still hope for bringing more of us in this country of unhealthy eating back to a future of healthier choices. I am trying to assimilate all of this information so that I can make some suggestions for action for everyone from today’s moms to tomorrow’s leaders. While I am working on this, please read this article by Mark Bittman in the New York Times about the benefits of the Mediterranean diet.

This week we are welcoming two new vendors who have been with Smart Markets in the past and will hopefully return to the fold this season.

Anne-Isabel Barber will bring us her Joie de Vivre salad dressings, which include Honey Mint and Zesty Balsamic for winter salads, and we have recipes for winter salads at the Smart Markets tent! She will also introduce her first spice mix, Cajun Sand.

We will also reintroduce a blast from the past — if you have visited our Reston market, you might remember Rockahock Farm. Alex will bring us a wonderful selection of baked goods, both sweet and savory. Look for fruit butters and marmalades, savory cheesecakes, cheese straws, and their famous sweet potato biscuits. Their products are all locally sourced and just plain delicious. I love the incredible sour-cherry butter — hope they have some!

Celtic Pasties will not be with us this week, but Uncle Fred will be! BBQ is back!

Please take the opportunity to enjoy some really great greens at this time of year — they are sweeter when touched by frost and contain so many important nutrients that our bodies need to be able to resist those winter colds and flu. And we’ve got recipes for the greens too!

See you at the market!
