Orange Line Dwellers Live Longer, Study Says

Living on the end of the Metro’s Orange Line in Fairfax County could add seven years to your life, according to a report by the Commission to Build a Healthier America.

The study examines the disparity between life expectancies of people who live just miles away from each other. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's commission aims to improve public health, according to their website.

  • The results report that those living at the far edge of the Orange Line in Fairfax County live an average of 84 years.
  • On the Blue Line, in Arlington and Fairfax Counties, life expectancy comes in at 83 years. The opposite end of the Blue Line in Prince George’s County brings life expectancies of 78 years.
  • Those on the Red Line in Montgomery County live about 84 years.
  • The heart of the District brings the lowest life expectancy at 77 years.

The commission cites poor access to healthy foods, opportunities for exercise, smoking, and access to healthy drinking water among the reasons for the disparities.
