Knouse Family Brings Fruits from Pennsylvania to Local Markets

This is the second year Knouse Fruitlands is selling its produce off the family farmlands

Selling berries and tree fruits, Knouse Fruitlands is in its second year selling its produce to other farmers markets.

Known for its Round Barn near Cashtown, Penn., the Knouse farm has been in the family for four generations.

Kevin Knouse is a fourth generation member of the Knouse family who has gone back to the family business. He helps market the Knouse Fruitlands’ produce at local farmers markets. Knouse’s father, uncle and aunt run the farm now.

“We were looking for different avenues to sell our fruit and also we had other family members coming into the business and we needed to find other avenues to support them,” Knouse said. “It was one of my ideas to come and do these … It’s about a day’s driving distance and coming out here and doing this, people are learning more about our market and the Round Barn.”

Since 1984, Knouse Fruitlands has its own farm market at its Round Barn, which sells the farm’s produce everyday and is a “unique visiting experience,” Knouse said.

Beginning with apples, the Knouse farm expanded to other tree fruits, berries and vegetables.

Knouse said the farm uses Integrated Pest Management, which uses as little pesticides as possible.

“We try to stay on top of technology when it comes to different growing techniques,” he said.
