MTV launched at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 1, 1981

When MTV launched 30 years ago today, it aired — you'll never believe this — a music video.

Yes, long before Jersey Shore and 16 and Pregnant dominated the channel's airwaves, MTV took its place in television history with the video for the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star."

It quickly became a must for artists to develop videos for their singles to gain exposure. And some — namely Madonna and Michael Jackson — used the medium to launch themselves to superstardom status.

It would be easy to use this 30th anniversary as a way to begrudge the way the channel is being used today, as only the channel's offspring show actual music videos on a somewhat regular basis. Instead, let's take some time to reminisce.
