The Board of Directors of the Reston Association is scheduled to consider a draft letter Thursday that pushes for the snow plowing and de-icing of the W&OD Trail in the area.

The letter, from the Pedestrian and Bicycling Advisory Committee to the Northern Virginia Regional Parks Authority (NVRPA), says that the "W&OD is more than just a recreational facility – it is the backbone of the network of roads and paths that connects Reston to other destinations in the region and makes cycling a viable means of transportation."

The advisory committee notes that the parks authority has opposed plowing but says circumstances have changed over the years and that reconsideration is warranted.

More people than ever use the trail, the draft letter says, adding that it has become "the I-66 for bicycle commuters from the West to the Tysons area and further east."

The draft letter further states, "Authorities would never leave important automobile routes untreated after snow and ice. Bicycle and pedestrian transportation deserves the same consideration."

Are people really jogging & biking in this frigid weather? Wow!

The cost to clear the W&OD Trail of snow and ice could be relatively modest during typical snow events, and there are alternative ways to accomplish the task, including the use of volunteers or locality staff. This policy change is long overdue.

Yes, Amrish, people really do cycle and jog year round. The limiting factor is the snow and ice, not the cold air. I have been a frequent cyling commuter for decades. Some of the cross country skiers may complain about plowing the path, but there is the gravel path in many areas. Plowing may not encourage me to cycle on days the snow or freezing rain fall but would allow the trail to clear out completely much sooner. The trail is indeed a major commuter route.
