Rain Causes Road Closures in Oakton Area

A map and listing of closed roads and advisories in and around Oakton

Update 10:25 a.m.: Fairfax County can expect more rain today. Predictions have the county seeing about an inch more of rain, with the strongest bands coming through the county in the afternoon.

The Fairfax County Division of Solid Waste Collection and Recycling will collect its Friday routes. Service disruptions are not expected.

Update 1:30 a.m.: Fairfax County released a list of roads still closed early Friday morning. The following from the Oakton-Vienna area were included:

  • Waples Mill & Oakton Rd
  • Miller Rd / Westhurst Ln
  • Hunter Mill / Galloping Way
  • Birdfoot / Stuart Mill
  • Foxmill Rd / Folkstone
  • Foxmill Rd / Deerfield
  • Hunter Mill / Hunter Station Rd
  • Lawyers Rd / Hunter Mill
  • Lawyers / Galloping Way

Update 12:30 a.m. Friday: A flood warning is in effect until 5 a.m. Also, Miller Road is still included on the list of roads impassable because of flooding.

Fairfax County issued a statement advising residents to plan for their normal morning commute, but to be aware it may be disrupted by debris or damaged roads. The county is asking drivers to not attempt to drive through water on the roads.

Driving Tips

  • State law requires headlights to be on when windshield wipers are in use.
  • Slow your speed for weather and road conditions — and be watchful for fallen trees, power lines, debris and other hazards that may get blown onto or fall across a roadway.
  • Increase distances between vehicles.
  • Buckle up and don’t drive distracted.

Update 6:12 p.m.: The Church of the Good Shepherd, 2351 Hunter Mill Road, has sustained major water damage, the church wrote on its website.

Phones are also out, though some cell phone coverage remains.

The church canceled all meetings for Thursday.

"The church staff and leadership will be reassessing our ability to reopen tomorrow, Friday, September 9," the church wrote.

Update 5:31 p.m.: Police are urging motorists to stay off the roadways.The National Weather Service's Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday.

More area closings:

  • Waples Mill Road is closed just west of Waples Mill Elementary
  • Fox Mill Road has water over the roadway between Hunt Road and Bronzedale Road
  • There is flooding at Birdfoot Lane and Stuart Mill Road off of Vale, says reader Ann Costello. Cars that are stranded are blocking the road.
  • Sections of 50 East and West are closed around 123.
  • Hunter Station Road Bridge is flooded and closed between Lawyers Road and Hunters Den Ln, wrote in reader Larry Howell.
  • Hunters Den Lane is also flooded, seen in the picture in the media gallery above; the water is rising toward the sign marking the road.
  • Parts of Route 29 are also flooded

Original: Roads in and around Oakton began to close Thursday afternoon as rain continued to pummel drivers in Northern Virginia.

Lawyers Road — a typical spot for flooding during heavy storms — was one of the first roads to close off to drivers, beginning at Garrett Road.
