Oakton's Logan Cunningham Places 2nd in USA Triathlon Championships

With her second-place finish, the Flint Hill School Junior is automatically qualified for the nationals race next year.

After competing in three seasons as a triathlete, Logan Cunningham, 16, recently placed second in her age group of 15-19 at the USA Triathlon Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Hy-Vee triathlon includes a 1.5 km swim, a 40 km bike ride and a 10 km run.  An estimated 2,700 athletes competed in the triathlon Sept. 1, which was initially delayed due to heavy rain.

Cunningham, who is a junior at the Flint Hill School in Oakton, said the competition was "tiring but it was all worth it".

Cunningham plays three varsity sports at Flint Hill, including cross country, swimming and track and she also swims for the Mason MAKOS Club Swim Team.

"My dad and grandfather have been involved in triathlons for many years, so naturally I was interested in the sport," Cunningham said.

Cunningham is looking forward to the 2014 season, but in the meantime she is continuing to race in two more triathlons, one in the Outer Banks, NC in two weeks and a second in Deep Creek, Md. in three weeks.

"I'm doing the Deep Creek race to close out the season with my dad and grandfather," Cunningham said.

As a second-place finisher on the national level, Cunningham is automatically qualified to participate in the national race next year.
