Oakton High School Earns Wells Fargo Cup

The Group AAA school has built a successful athletics program with both the boys and girls teams.

For the first time in the school's history, Oakton High School has been awarded the Group AAA Wells Fargo Cup.

As the top school in its league, Oakton received the most points for best overall record in VHSL state level competition in 27 sports.  The other cup winners were Blacksburg, Group AA and George Mason, Group A.

"We are very excited about this award," said Pat Full, student activities director at Oakton High School.

Oakton’s athletes scored a total of 405 points running away with the Group AAA crown, with Great Bridge finishing second with 282.5 points. The Cougars scored 177.5 points in the spring reaching the semifinals in boys soccer, girls tennis and baseball, while picking up points in boys outdoor track.

"There were several teams that have advanced into state play.  It is important that there are so many teams adding to our school's athletic success," Full added.

As Patch recently reported, Oakton's girls teams have just completed an extremely successful year, which contributed to winning this award.

Oakton, tied for sixth after the fall Group AAA standings, gained the top spot in the winter season after winning a state title in girls swimming, while earning third-place points in boys swimming and girls indoor track. Oakton also added 50 points for the Claudia Dodson Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award.

"We are extremely proud of all of our athletic programs," Full said.

“We congratulate all the schools who competed in this year’s VHSL championship events,” said Ken Tilley, VHSL executive director. “We especially congratulate the best of the best, Oakton, Blacksburg and George Mason; and we thank Wells Fargo for supporting this important recognition.”

The Wells Fargo Cup winners will be recognized during VHSL Day at the University of Virginia football game this fall in Charlottesville.
