Holtorf Pumpkin Display on Hiatus This Year

For many residents in the Oakton-Vienna area, the annual Holtorf Pumpking Carving Halloween Art Display has become a regular stop around Halloween.

But this year locals will have to skip the Trott Avenue show, and Hurricane Sandy had nothing to do with it.

"Due to a crop failure, we will not have our display this year," Holtorf Pumpkin Carvers wrote to fans on its website. "After nearly 30 years of displaying creative pumpkin art, the driveway will be dark."

Last year, the Holtorf display had a record 248 carved pumpkins and its largest weighed 200 pounds. Its heaviest pumpkin ever, from 2010, weighed 325 pounds.

The carvers often created their own creatures on the pumpkins, but also put their own spin on famous artworks and well-known characters from pop culture.

For decades, Roger Holtorf has grown the pumpkins in his own backyard and carved them in his driveway with the help of volunteers.
