A weekly roundup of this week's kid-friendly activities

A magic show, ice cream treats, and a Hans Christian Andersen-inspired puppet show — there is a great assortment of family fun activities this week!

Where/When: Oakton Library, 10304 Lynnhaven Place, Oakton on Tuesday, June 21 at 2:30 p.m.

Why Go: Puppeteers bring the classic tales of Hans Christian Andersen to life at the Oakton Library. “The Ugly Duckling” and “Thumbelina” are just a few of the timeless stories that will become puppet shows. Young children will love this adorable show!

Where/When: Lake Anne Plaza, 1609 Washington Plaza, Reston on Thursday, June 16 and Sunday, June 19 from 11-11:30 a.m.

Why Go: As most parents know, kids are mesmerized by magicians! Turley the Magnificent is a terrific magician who specializes in children-pleasing tricks. Bring your kids to the Lake Anne Plaza on Thursday or Sunday to see Turley’s amazing and mind-boggling magic show!

Pricing: Free

Where/When: Newbridge Pool, 11718 Golf Course Square, Reston on Friday, June 17 at 4 p.m.

Why Go: It has been unseasonably hot already and it’s not even summer yet! Give your kids a cool treat by taking them to an ice cream social. Kids can beat the heat and enjoy a classic summer treat. Popsicles and ice cream will be on hand while supplies last. Check the weather before heading out because this event will be cancelled for rain.

Where/When: Reston Town Center, 11900 Market St., Reston on Friday, June 17 from 6-7 p.m.

Why Go: It’s always good to remind our children of the importance of exercise — especially with lazy summer days on the horizon. Your kids and teens will enjoy this Let’s Move expo. At the very least, they’ll love to meet the Washington Redskins cheerleaders who will be on hand to shake hands — and pom poms!

Pricing: Free

Where/When: 8100 Braddock Rd., Annandale on Saturday, June 18 from 1-10 p.m.

Why Go: Whether your kids love participating in or just watching extreme sports, they will love this skateboard competition for charity. If your kids are skateboarders themselves, they can raise money and enter the competition. Skaters can compete for prizes worth thousands of dollars!
