Flint Hill Parents, Students Fill Up At 'Empty Bowls'

The Clay Club raised thousands of dollars for a Washington food kitchen by selling handmade bowls.

The Clay Club expected to raise $3,000 at its "Empty Bowls" charity event Saturday. Students spent the past six weeks slinging handmade bowls on the school's pottery wheels. The bowls — nearly 300 of them — were sold at the fundraiser this weekend for $10 apiece.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the D.C. Central Kitchen, an organization in Washington that serves meals to the needy. After the bowls were sold at the event, patrons were directed to the school's cafeteria for a hot soup lunch — served in the bowls they had just purchased.

"I like being able to make things," said Jake Shor, 16, a sophomore at the school and a member of the Clay Club. "It's really nice to be able to imagine something in your mind and then be able to make it."

Students recently spent a day volunteering at the D.C. Central Kitchen. Shor said spending hours handling raw chicken and making sandwiches made him appreciate the Clay Club's efforts to raise money for the kitchen.

"It definitely helped," Shor said.
