DC United, Oakton Girls Soccer Team Up to Give Back

During Thursday's Youth Appreciation Night, DC United defender Daniel Woolard will be signing autographs and collecting used equipment for charity.

Soccer players young and old are gathering Thursday night in Oakton to celebrate the sport — and also help ensure kids in need get a chance to love the game, too.

During the Oakton High School girls soccer team's 3rd Annual Youth Appreciation Night, young soccer players wearing their jerseys can get into the 7 p.m. game for free to watch the Cougars take on Robinson High School.

The night, which includes a junior varsity game at 5:30 p.m. and a varsity match at 7 p.m., will feature giveaways, sideline games for kids and concessions (along with Chic-fil-a sandwiches), says Patty Weaver, an Oakton Girls Soccer Booster Representative.

But along with helping give the sport more exposure to younger player and fans, Oakton's girls soccer team is using the night to help DC United reach out to the area's underserved youth through the team's charity, United for D.C., and its after school soccer program United Soccer Club (USC).

The team is encouraging all attendees to bring along used or new soccer equipment for the program, which teaches attendees about soccer and how to build a healthy lifestyle.

New or slightly used soccer uniforms, cleats, balls, gloves, shin guards or other soccer equipment are needed, and anyone who donates will be entered into a door prize.

They'll also get a chance to meet Daniel Woolard, a DC United starting defender. He'll be signing autographs between 7 and 8:30 p.m. at the field.
