Friends of Vale Schoolhouse Earn Heritage Award

Chairman of the Board of Supervisors Sharon Bulova presented the Friends of Vale Schoolhouse with a Fairfax Heritage Award on Nov. 12 at the 7th annual Fairfax County History Conference.

Accepting the award were Carol Cross and Trish Strat, co-authors of the nomination of Oakton’s to the National Register of Historic Places.

Fairfax Heritage Awards are given for original research and writing on topics of interest to the general public. The research should include studying primary-source material, such as journals and diaries, old letters, census records and court records.

The Friends of Vale Schoolhouse received the $250 C. J. S. Durham Prize, named after Jack Durham, a longtime member of the Fairfax County History Commission, who served as its Chairman in the 1980s. Jack and his wife, Ethel, promoted the creation of the Great Falls National Park and were influential in persuading Congress to preserve the C&O Canal right-of-way as a national park.
