Vienna 13-15s Capture State Championship in Extra Inning Thriller

It took two extra innings, but Vienna finally came away with their 5-4, nine-inning win over Glen Allen to clinch the State Championship.

After seeing an early 3-0 lead disappear at 4-4, Vienna held on through extra innings to win. Garrett Zoukis tossed seven innings and gave up four runs, then Mark LeDuc pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to earn the win. All of that led up to Robby Harris' ninth inning, go-ahead RBI double into left to put Vienna in the lead.

Glen Allen, who had taken the long road to the championship after losing their first game to Arlington, 12-4, had won four straight games coming into the game. Vienna, however, extended its winning streak to nine games dating back to the District XIII Tournament.

It was Vienna's closest game of the tournament, as all other games were decided by at least eight runs.

Vienna's next test will be in Ocala, Fla., where the Southeast Regional Tournament will be held. Other teams at the tournament include Tallahassee (North FL), James Island (SC), Ocala (Host), Manatee County (South FL), Fort White (Invited FL), and Sawmills (West NC).

This is Vienna's second trip to the Southeast Regionals in as many years, as they went last year in place of Augusta County, who skipped to the World Series.

Congratulations to Zack and the rest of the Vienna players and coaches. Zack, I'd rather see you do stories like this one focusing your coverage on your team and others in the area's many leagues rather than writing about MLB news from around the country. Local coverage is even better when the team wins, so great job!
