In their second game of the Virginia State Tournament, the Vienna 13-15s topped New Kent County 15-4. They were down 2-0 going into the third inning, but a huge string of hits and walks led to an eight-run inning to give pitcher Mark LeDuc a comfortable lead. After pouring on seven more in the fourth inning, Vienna held off a small New Kent rally in the top of the fifth to win by slaughter rule, 15-4.
They head to the winners' bracket final against Arlington on Sunday. The winner of that game goes on to play in the championship. New Kent was knocked into the losers' bracket. The Vienna-Arlington game, which will be the fourth of its kind this year, brings back a bit of a rivalry from the District XIII Tournament. Both teams are from the district, and have played each other three times.
Arlington won the first meeting 6-1, but Vienna won the two championship games 5-1 and 5-3, respectively. Both Vienna and Arlington have played extremely well this tournament. Arlington outscored its opponents 36-6 in three games, while Vienna has outscored opponents 31-6 in two games.
Worth noting: In a losers' bracket game between Peachtree (near Williamsburg) and Brunswick County (just north of N.C. border), Peachtree took a 15-0 lead, only to squander it to a 16-run Brunswick rally. Brunswick was then eliminated by Augusta County in their next game.
