I need a weekend to recover from my weekend

I just got back into town from a relaxing three-day weekend. Or what would have been, was it not sandwiched between a visit with my mother and my annual mammogram. Because one of those things makes me feel like a manipulated boob … and the other is an uncomfortable medical procedure. (Ba-dum-bum.)

I’m kidding, of course. We had a great time visiting my mom and her husband in Virginia Beach. And my daughter gets so excited about spending time with them – she swears that one day she will live with them at the beach, apparently believing it would be a constant flow of ice cream and finger painting and being told hourly how adorable she is. (Who am I kidding? It probably would be.) I enjoy visiting them, too. Especially now that I have my own daughter, it is interesting to spend time with my mom to gain a little foresight into all the ways I’m genetically predisposed to drive my own progeny insane.

Our trips down there always seem to go by too quickly, as we always try to pack a lot into a weekend. In addition to visiting with my mom and her husband, we took care of some business while we were in town. We met with our wedding photographer to procure the negatives from our wedding — a meeting that required us to bring $325 cash to a place at the oceanfront called Bad Ass Coffee. On our way there, my husband said to me, “I imagine this is exactly how a drug deal would go down.”

The trip also included me and my mom going to a bachelorette party together Saturday night. Nothing says you are transitioning from a mother/child relationship and into a peer relationship more than chatting with your mother in the middle of a crowded bar while she has a penis straw tucked behind her ear and a guy walks by and calls you both “cougars.” (I suppose I should just be thankful the ‘GILF’ t-shirt remained in the closet for this outing.)

After our visit in Virginia Beach, we headed to the Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg – lest my daughter experience anything other than 24-hour-a-day entertainment. And for two solid days we played in the water, bought bad, overpriced food, and tried to convince ourselves the pool was warm because it was heated (in my happy denial place – la la la la la la la la la).

All in all an eventful and interesting weekend. And one that made me happy to be home again. Uncomfortable medical procedures and all …
