Update: Pursuit of Robbery Suspect Ends in Crash

Suspect, considered armed and dangerous, was apprehended in Washington, D.C. after he fled in white SUV on Wednesday

Update: 8:48 p.m.

ABC7 News is reporting the pursuit of the BB&T Bank robbery suspect ended in a collision with a police cruiser, sending two bystanders and the suspect to the hospital.

The cruiser bumped into the sport utility vehicle driven by the suspect on Livingston Road in southeast D.C., sending the SUV into a tailspin, the report said. In the collision, the SUV also struck another nearby vehicle. Three people, including the suspect, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The chase ended on the 4600 block of Livingston Road, in front of the Patricia R. Harris Education Center.

An eyewitness told ABC7 News she saw the police pull a money bag out of the vehicle after apprehending the suspect before he could flee.

Fairfax County Police have not released the suspect's name. The suspect has been arrested, but no charges have been filed against him.

Update 5 p.m. Oakton Bank Robbery Suspect May Be Same Man Who Struck in Reston, McLean

The suspect who was apprehended after an Oakton bank robbery Wednesday morning may be the same man suspected of two recent bank robberies in Reston and one in McLean, Fairfax County Police said.

Update 4 p.m.: Bank Robbery Suspect Transported to Hospital: The bank robbery suspect was transported to the Washington Center Hospital in Washington, D.C., with non-life-threatening injuries, though Fairfax County Police are unable to confirm the circumstances for his hospital visit.

The suspect has not been formally charged, though he has been arrested, said Officer Don Gotthardt, a spokesperson for the police.

"With multiple jurisdictions involved, they haven't sorted the charges out yet," Gotthardt said, explaining the Federal Bureau of Investigations always has the choice to take over a bank robbery investigation. "It's a case-by-case basis, though. At this point, we don't know if that's going to happen here."

If it does, the case would go through the U.S. Attorney's office.

Update 2:40 p.m.: Police Pursuit Nabs Suspect In Oakton Morning Bank Robbery

The man who robbed BB&T Bank in Oakton displayed a handgun and demanded money, police said in a statement. 

There were no injuries at the bank, and the suspect left with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

After robbing the bank, the suspect was spotted heading for the Woodrow Wilson bridge. Shortly after, he was apprehended in the 4600 block of Livingston Road in S.E. Washington, D.C.

Though Fairfax County Police could not confirm if he has been arrested and charged, they are confident the person apprehended is the suspect in the bank robbery, said Lucy Caldwell, a police spokesperson.

Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted Fairfax County in the apprehension, including the Prince George’s County Police Department, the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  

A Fairfax County Police K-9 team and helicopter assisted in the apprehension effort, police said.

Update 1:17 p.m.: Police apprehended someone matching the description of the suspect — male, mid-40s, wearing all black, driving a white sport utility vehicle — at 3rd Street and Livingston Road, SE, in Washington, D.C., police said.

BB&T, at 2941 Chain Bridge Road, was robbed at 10:44 a.m. today, and a suspect was apprehended after a pursuit that led into D.C. Multiple jurisdictions were involved in the pursuit.

Original 11:23 a.m: Police Search For Armed Suspect In Oakton Bank Robbery

Fairfax County Police are pursuing a suspect they believe robbed Oakton's BB&T Bank this morning.

The bank, at 2941 Chain Bridge Road, was robbed at 10:44 a.m., according to a police alert. Police said the suspect fled the scene in a white Lexus SUV toward Vienna. K-9 and helicopter units are assisting in the search.

Police say the suspect is armed and dangerous; if residents see the suspect, do not approach them. Call Police instead.
