Oakton Dentist Arrested for Distributing Narcotics

UPDATE (March 22): On March 20, U.S. Magistrate Judge T. Rawles Jones Jr. modified the conditions of Hamada Makarita's release to allow him to prescribe certain antibiotics. He is permitted to prescribe Amoxicillin, Erythromycin and Clindamycin.

UPDATE (March 16):  During Hamada Makarita's initial court appearance Thursday, U.S. Magistrate Judge T. Rawles Jones Jr. ordered him to surrender his Drug Enforcement Administration license and travel documents and prohibited him from prescribing drugs in any extent as conditions of his release.

No monetary bail was set for his release.

Oakton dentist Hamada Makarita illegally acquired narcotic painkillers over a three-year stretch during which he took explicit photos of women to whom he had provided the drugs, according to federal prosecutors.

Makarita, who lives and owns a dental practice in Oakton, was arrested today for illegally obtaining narcotics and then providing them to the women he dated, according to documents from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Makarita is charged with distributing a controlled substance and made his initial appearance this afternoon at the U.S. District Court in Alexandria. The charge holds a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison if convicted.

He faces no sex charges, nor does the affidavit specify whether the women in the photos took the drugs willingly.

The FBI began investigating Makarita after a former employee at his practice — at 2936 Chain Bridge Road, Suite 200 — provided information to the FBI accusing him of calling in medically unnecessary prescriptions under the names of his employees and patients, and instructed patients to return unused pills to his office.

Prescriptions included painkillers such as Vicodin, Percoset and Fetanyl.

The former employee told the FBI that Makarita would describe how he would provide pills to his girlfriends during dates, even once sending the former employee three emails in one day which contained three photos: one of a nude female, who appeared unconscious, lying on a bed with her legs spread; another of a female sitting behind a counter with her eyes closed wearing a shirt, but because of limitations whether she is wearing pants can't be determined though a bare leg is showing; and a third one of a female with her eyes closed leaning against a bathroom counter wearing high-heeled shoes but no clothing.

A review of the Virginia Prescription Monitoring Program report for Makarita showed 16 prescriptions were assigned to the former employee between 2007 and 2010, according to the affidavit. None of those prescriptions were listed in the informant's patient file.

Other informants told the FBI of instances in which Makarita provided narcotics to his girlfriends while also abusing drugs himself. Read the full affidavit above.
