I Remembered Our Anniversary

At Home with Brutalism celebrates one year at the Oakton Patch.

Wow. Who knew I had so much to say?

(Stop raising your collective hands, smartypantses, that was a rhetorical question.)

Almost exactly one year ago today, I became a columnist for the Oakton Patch, thanks to editor Nicole Trifone finding my blog and taking a chance that the good people of Oakton might actually read something titled “At Home with Brutalism.” (My initial submission choice for the column title, “Brutalism at home” was rejected. Thank goodness for conscientious editors.) And every Wednesday since then, I have had the pleasure — nay, the responsibility — of delving tirelessly into the important issues that affect us as a community and as a nation to bring you breaking news and keep you informed.

And what a year it was. Total excitement-palooza, if I may be technical. Nationally, we had a , which resulted in a personal victory of conceiving and inserting 27 euphemisms into a single column. Closer to home, I wrote about . This, despite being plagued by , , flooding, , , and alerting us to the fact that we should practice safe sex. (Looks like the No. 35 slot will continue to remain elusive.)

On a personal level, you’ve shared my literal and figurative journeys to and ; lots of stories about and our adventures in parenting; my and (looking at you, “pustule” and “cafetorium“).

I also wrote about this fall, and as it turns out, we decided to go. (Note to self: I am writing about the trip on the Oakton Patch, which presumably means that travel costs should be considered a reimbursable expense …)

I plan to come back from this vacation refreshed and ready to tackle the next year with the in-depth journalism style to which you’ve undoubtedly grown accustomed.        

Once I get the images from the Balinese Fantasy Fest out of my mind, that is.
