Hunter Mill Road has been blocked off between Vale Road and Hunter Valley Road due to a water main break that caused a sinkhole, Fairfax County Police said.
A detour has been set up from Hunter Valley Road to Leeds Road. There is no estimate on when the road will fully open for traffic.
The break is at Hunter Mill Road and Beekay Court, police said.
"For nearly an hour, we observed the geyser-like fountain coming from the hole in the ground," said Lois Kennedy, who lives nearby. "It was shooting so high into the air. We were told by police it was shooting 60 feet into the air. It looked like Old Faithful."
Kennedy said the water was shooting out at an angle, filling the yards of two houses on Hunter Mill Road with water.
