Football: Huskies Earn First Win of the Season

With a 37-6 victory over John Paul the Great Catholic High on Saturday, Flint Hill School's football team earned its first win of the season.

"I think having this first win is really good for the team," said Conor Chess, who led his team in rushing yards. "We had our best week of practice this week, so we were the most prepared for this game and our hard work paid off."

The win comes after an injury-laden start to the season, forcing key players to the sidelines and second-string players to step up. 

"We had a lot of adversity this week with injuries from last week, but the kids who took their places really stepped up and made a difference," Chess said. "One of our best players, Ben Kase, got a concussion last week. Bruce Briglia took over for him and held it down."

The Huskies relied on their running game for the win, with senior runningback Chess leading the way with 134 yards. Cameron Vaughn added 101 rushing yards. As a team, the Huskies rushed a total of 333 yards.

Quarterback Stevie Peterson opened scoring for the Huskies with a 1-yard run in the first, then kicked in the extra point for a 7-0 lead. The Wolves nearly tied after a 96-yard interception return, but a failed two-point conversion kept them down 7-6.

The Huskies then began to pile on the points, with touchdowns on runs from Vaughn (47 yards) and Chess (73 yards), and on a 22-yard pass from Peterson to Chess.

After halftime, the Huskies added one more touchdown in the third quarter on a 43-yard pass to J.J. Becker. The Huskies earned two more points on an unforced safety in the fourth quarter.

Peterson completed all five extra point attempts.

Peterson passed for 128 yards, with Vaughn leading his team in receiving yards with 66 on two catches. D.J. Jones had five catches for 62 yards.

The Huskies (1-2) will travel to St. Anne's-Belfield (0-3) for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff Saturday.
