A Thanksgiving Day Wine List

Oakton Wine Shop offers a few suggestions for Turkey Day

With all the inevitable scrambling in the last few days before Thanksgiving Day, we thought we'd help relieve some of the stress involved in picking out any family gathering's best stress-reliever: wine.

We consulted Bryan Gauthier, owner of the , for his top suggestions to complement your Turkey Day meal.

  • Finca Valldosera Brut Nature Cava, NV: $17.99/Special Price $15.59, A great way to start every occasion, considered our "House" Sparkling Wine, this cava has beautiful fruit and elegance nice delicate bubbles and a creamy rich mid center that is a great starter for your palate.
  • Mas Estela Vinya Selva de Mar Blanc 2010: $25.99/Special Price $22.59, A new wine this season from Spain that has inspired us to stretch the food and wine pairings to a new level. Made from Grenache Gris and Muscat d Alexandria this wine has a touch of residual sugar that makes for a rounder wine with a lot of structure, allowing it to stand up to a wide variety of foods. Perfect on its own or with game, turkey and grilled fish.
  • J Pinot Gris California 2010: $17.99/Special Price $15.59, Delicate fruit and elegant. A rich melon and tropical fruit that will balance with all of the traditional fixings.
  • Martin Schaetzel Riesling Cuvee Reserve 2009: $19.99/Special Price $17.59, A rich flavorful wine that is not sweet but has nice fruit and body.  One of the premier houses in Alsace, this wine has finesse and elegance.
  • Pellegrini Brothers Pinot Noir North Coast 2010: $14.99/Special Price $12.59, It is hard to find a Pinot Noir under $20 that is worth drinking but to find one at this price is amazing. Beautiful cherry cola fruit, and lavender and cedar on the finish, make this a fun wine to drink on its own or pair with turkey.
  • Domaine Maillard Chorey Les Beaune Rouge 2008: $29.99/Special Price $26.59, Elegance and power define most Burgundies and this is no exception. One of my favorite producers from Burgundy Pascal makes wines that make you want to drink and not just look at. Cherry, minerality, woody and a touch of coffee notes are perfectly harmonious.
  • Evesham Woods Pinot Noir 2009: $28.99/Special Price $24.59, A classic Oregon Pinot Noir that is made all naturally and shows character and body that you expect to find in great wines. Cherry, cedar, woody, minerality and currant on the finish make for a perfect pairing for the turkey and trimmings that are traditionally served.

There are more pairings out there than the ones recommended. Gauthier suggests you work with a local wine shop where they are more than happy to help you find that perfect wine for you.
